We’re Hiring
Controller & HR Manager
Owner-operated custom home builder S&T Construction is searching for an experienced Controller
& HR Manager who will jump in to help this vibrant company grow to the next level. This Controller
& HR Manager will ‘own’ both the financial engine and the people systems of the company –
building the back-office infrastructure that lets a fast-growing builder and developer scale with
confidence. Our people are what matters – our team, our clients, our subs and community – we’re
looking for the right person with a flexible, growth mindset to join with us!
In just 5 short years we’ve built one of the leading residential construction companies in the Upper
Arkansas Valley – and we’re not done building yet. We pride ourselves on high-quality
craftsmanship, strong client relationships, and a collaborative work culture. Our twin values of
integrity and communication say it all – we have high expectations of ourselves and love pursuing
continuous improvement to meet them.
S&T Construction operates out of Buena Vista, Colorado. This place is indescribable in both
physical surroundings and community. The outdoors is the foundation of life here while the people
are the glue.
Position Summary
S&T, together with a new development company (in formation, “DevCo” for now), is pursuing an
innovative operating shakeup. This shakeup will create a new Operating Company entity that
provides employment, administrative, and back-office functions to both S&T and the DevCo (as
well as other subsidiary or linked entities in the future). This position will be responsible for working
with the owners of S&T and DevCo to set up this Operating Company, and build and implement the
systems across financial management, HR, and administrative functions.
We are seeking a hands-on Controller & HR Manager to build and run the financial and human
resources backbone of these growing residential construction and development companies. This is
a builder’s seat, not a caretaker’s – you will design the systems, not simply operate the ones you
inherit. On the finance side you will own the full accounting cycle: AP, AR, job costing, WIP, payroll,
month-end close, and the internal controls that protect the company. On the people side you will
evaluate whether a PEO is the right fit for us, keep our handbook current, build and administer our
benefits package, and handle the full employee lifecycle. You will report directly to the owners.
S&T uses BuilderTrend project management platform, Microsoft OneDrive, Google Workspace, and
Quickbooks Online for the majority of our financial, project, and file tracking. Applicants should be
Quickbooks experts, and able learn new software systems quickly.
Location: Buena Vista, Colorado
Status: Salaried, exempt. Full-time, on-site.
Compensation: $95,000 – $110,000 annually DOE, plus bonus eligibility.
Benefits: $750/mo health insurance stipend and $100/mo cell phone stipend to start
Accounting Operations & Financial Controls
- Own the full accounts payable cycle – subcontractor and vendor invoice intake, match to
purchase orders and contracts, approval routing, lien waiver collection (if applicable), and
on-time weekly payment runs - Own accounts receivable – client invoicing and progress billings, draw requests, retainage
tracking, cash application, and collections follow-up - Oversee bookkeeper to run month-end close on a published calendar, including
reconciliations, accruals, and a clean financial package delivered to ownership on a
committed date each month - Produce monthly financial statements, cash flow forecasts, and management reporting
- Design, document, and enforce internal controls over cash, purchasing, approvals, and
segregation of duties - Manage banking and lender relationships, credit facilities, and construction and project
draw submissions - Own the annual budget process and track actual-to-budget performance at both the
company and project level - Coordinate with our outside CPA on tax filings, year-end, and any review or audit
requirements - Maintain compliance across sales and use tax, business licensing, W-9 and 1099
collection, and subcontractor insurance certificate tracking
Job Cost & Construction Accounting
- Maintain the job cost system so every dollar lands on the right project, phase, and cost
code - Prepare and maintain the WIP schedule – percentage of completion, over- and under-
billings, and margin by job - Partner with Project Managers on budget-versus-actual reviews, change order tracking, and
cost-to-complete estimates - Administer subcontracts and purchase orders, including insurance and license verification,
compliance documentation, and payment application review - Support estimating and preconstruction with historical cost data and margin analysis
- Deliver project- and entity-level reporting for our development work, including construction
draws, capitalized costs, and lender or investor reporting
Systems & Process Building
- Regularly review software integrations to ensure proper mapping and functionality
- Document repeatable processes and write the desk procedures so the back office runs the
same way whether or not any one person is in the building - Automate manual work – approval workflows, recurring entries, reporting packages –
wherever it buys the team time - Establish the reporting cadence: what gets reported, to whom, and how often
- Find the weak points in our current processes and fix them before they become problems
Human Resources
- Evaluate PEO options against in-house administration – cost, service levels, benefits buying
power, and compliance coverage – and recommend the structure that actually fits a
company our size - Manage the PEO or in-house HR relationship and hold vendors accountable to their service
commitments - Review, update, and maintain the employee handbook so it reflects current Colorado and
federal law and the way we actually operate - Design, source, and administer the benefits package – health, dental, vision, retirement,
and supplemental lines – and run open enrollment - Work with Bookkeeper to run payroll end to end, including PTO accruals, certified payroll,
and prevailing wage requirements where they apply - Own the full employee lifecycle – job postings and recruiting, offer letters, onboarding, I-9
verification, orientation, and offboarding - Maintain personnel files and HR recordkeeping in compliance with FLSA, FMLA, ADA, and
Colorado employment law, including FAMLI, the Healthy Families and Workplaces Act, and
the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act - Manage workers’ compensation – claims, return-to-work coordination, and annual policy
audits - Build and run performance review, compensation, and career-path frameworks for both
field and office staff - Partner with field leadership on safety program administration and training records
- Serve as the first point of contact for employee relations and coach managers through
issues before they escalate
Expectations
- ‘All-in’ mentality – we grow, fail, learn, and get better together! No task is below anyone in
the company – pick up a broom, pick up trash, move materials, manage up to success. - Builder’s mindset – you would rather design the system than inherit one; you see a gap and
close it without being asked - Discretion and integrity – you will hold payroll, compensation, and personnel information;
confidentiality is non-negotiable - Proactive communication – flag issues, ask questions, and keep the team informed without
being asked - Accuracy and follow-through – the numbers are right, the deadlines are met, and what you
commit to gets done - Comfort with ambiguity – we’re growing fast and not everything is written down yet; writing it
down is the job - Work until the job is done – we care about work/life balance, not about 40 hours/wk. If the
job is done, go for a bike ride!
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years in a
Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior accounting role - Construction and/or real estate development industry experience is strongly preferred – job
costing, WIP, percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, retainage, lien waivers, and
subcontractor compliance - Demonstrated experience building or materially improving accounting systems and
processes, not simply maintaining them - Working knowledge of HR administration – benefits, payroll, handbooks, and employment
law compliance - Experience evaluating or managing a PEO strongly preferred
- Proficiency with QuickBooks and construction management platforms (Buildertrend);
advanced Excel required - Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business, or equivalent experience; CPA or
CCIFP a plus - Strong written and verbal communication – you can explain a WIP schedule to a Project
Manager and a benefits election to a first-year carpenter - Bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
- Ability to work on-site full time in Buena Vista, CO, with periodic travel to job sites
throughout Chaffee and surrounding counties
Work Environment
This is a full-time, on-site position based in our Buena Vista office. We’ll gather each week as a full
staff team, and you should expect visits to job and project sites – you can’t cost a project you’ve
never walked. We focus on whether the job is getting done, expectations are being met, and
relationships are being honored. This mentality should shape every bit of the work environment!
Month-end, payroll cycles, and year-end will drive some heavier weeks, and coordination with
vendors, lenders, subs, and our CPA will be a regular part of your rhythm. We’ll provide you with a
laptop and the tools you need to do the job well.
