Plumbing Fixtures Selections: What to Know Before You Choose

Custom Home Selections

Plumbing fixtures are an essential part of your home’s functionality and design. They include sinks, faucets, bathtubs, shower valves, and shower accessories, and they have a major impact on both everyday usability and the aesthetic of your spaces. Fixtures are highly visible elements, so their style, finish, and layout can influence other selections like countertops, cabinetry, and tile.

When selecting plumbing fixtures, it’s helpful to think about the specific function of each space. Kitchen faucets, bathroom sinks, tubs, and showers each have different needs and design considerations. Planning fixtures carefully ensures that your plumbing system can be installed efficiently and that your final selections match your design goals.

Common considerations for plumbing fixtures include:

Fixture Type & Layout

  • Sinks – Bathroom and kitchen sinks can be undermount, drop-in, or integrated with countertops.
  • Faucets – Deck-mounted faucets are the most common, while wall-mounted faucets may be preferred in some modern or custom designs.
  • Bathtubs – Freestanding tubs, alcove tubs, or Roman tubs; deck-mounted or wall-mounted fillers must be considered early to ensure rough plumbing aligns.
  • Shower Fixtures – Shower valves are critical early selections for proper rough-in. Consider multiple shower heads, handheld wands, and wall-mounted versus ceiling-mounted options.

Timing & Installation Phasing

  • Some fixtures need to be selected early in the construction process to allow for proper rough-in and plumbing layout. Shower valves, tubs and any wall-mounted fixtures must be on-site before framing or tile work begins.
  • Bathtubs, along with their deck- or wall-mounted fillers, must also be planned early to ensure plumbing connections are correctly placed.
  • Sinks and deck-mounted faucets can be selected later in the process without delaying construction, as long as the rough plumbing has been accommodated.

Performance & Functionality

  • Durability – High-quality metals, finishes, and materials resist corrosion, wear, and mineral buildup.
  • Ease of Use – Consider ergonomics for faucets, shower controls, and bathtub fillers. Handles, spouts, and showerheads should be comfortable and intuitive for all household members.
  • Maintenance – Finishes such as polished chrome, brushed nickel, or matte black vary in ease of cleaning and visible wear over time.

Budget Considerations

Plumbing fixtures vary widely in cost depending on brand, material, finish, and features. Simple faucets and sinks may be more economical, while freestanding tubs, wall-mounted faucets, and deck mounted tub fillers tend to be higher-end. Using your plumbing fixture allowance as a guide helps balance design desires with practical budget limits.

By carefully considering style, function, and timing, homeowners can select plumbing fixtures that enhance both the usability and visual appeal of kitchens and bathrooms, ensuring spaces are comfortable, efficient, and aligned with the overall design of the home.
